I just found the reborn Nuns & Orphans, yeah I'm absolutely tickled. Would have been back sooner if I was paying anything remotely like attention to the world around me. It's k-rad cool to see that you are are still around, and this is great because even those of you who were deported are still in touch with this newfangled global network. Since I haven't been around much lately, to jog your memory I used to call the commodore board a lot, and I ran my own that many of you were on: The TwinkieZone & The Darksided Personalities of Vindictive Edibles. About the time those boards cratered I fled town, but I've been back in Houston for a year or so. Anyway, I'm glad Beinfang told me about this finally, as an afterthought, heh.

I remember the Shop. I loved that place (sniff) Then that Weasel (TM) that ran it, started whining something about money, and being broke, couldn't afford the phone line, blah, blah, blah!

Then I last heard he had became a llama pimp on the streets of Afganistan, the things that happens to peoples!

The Shop went away because the guy running it got married and moved to the Heights. THEN he started pimping llamas.

Which, strangely enough, involves some of the same skills...

Yeah, I used to be on both Terminally Ill and Call It What You Want when I was 12 or 13 and had an even ickier handle. 1200 baud seemed so great, since only a god could read that fast. Weird to think BBSing got to my head when I was at such an impressionable age.

been 10 years since I drew this, how did it go now...

By: Ralf

Installing 98 ontop of an existing system is hit or miss -- sometimes it's flawless and othertimes it results in an unstable environment.

On my four PC's I've been very lucky. On every one of them it upgraded 95 without a hitch. I haven't had to format a drive. BUT, my systems were clean and stable to begin with.

A common thing I hear from folks is, "I'm gonna upgrade because my current system locks up." Bad idea. FDISK it first, then install from scratch.

("Or better yet, just FDISK it. Then buy a MacIntosh." <--Preemptive Microsoft slam :-)

I'm running an OEM for our systems. And that's what's frustrating. My system was stable as a rocke before I put 98 on it. I even disbaled the quick shut down option, and it is still crashing. In the past week, I have been abel to narrow this much down. If I bring up my system, and load NOTHING, I can shut it down just fine. If I bring up anything that I need to use in the course of a day to work, and if I even manually close all applications before shutting down it still either crashes with a blue screen (yes, just like the one on TV when they were doing the demo) or hangs on the shut-down screen. Has been most perplexing. Bright side about it is, that I am gonna get a second system sometime next week, so I can play with mine during the day while I'm still working. Sometimes being a guinea pig can be fun!

slightly different but related subject..... I am about to upgrade my system to the last version of 95 before they killed it for 98... (I ALWAYS wait until the bugs are pretty much stamped out before I upgrade, as a result I'm ALWAYS 1 generation behind on OS's.... but that way i can learn from everyone elses mistakes....) its an OEM version I aquired for nada.... what is the safest way to put it onto a win 3.11 system without having to nuke the machine and start from scratch? (not sure I have enough empty zip disks on hand to do a full system backup...)

Response #52
By: Capt. Spastic
Date: 7/1/98 11:18:12 AM

Well, actually, you can't put an OEM version on a system that already has a OS on it. It's not designed for that. It's an OEM designed for a NEW system that does not have an OS on it. There _IS_ a work around to do for it. If you do into the previous OS directory, and rename the win.com file, it will usually install ok. If you would like to preserve your old os, install 95 to a different dir, and then you should be able to boot to the old OS using the F8 key on start-up, and the previous operating system option. Truthfully though, if you want the least painful way of installing and getting 95 up and running, best thing to do is to format the drive, wipe it clean. Then install 95. You'll be glad you did.

well, i did the workaround nuking win.com and the sys and windows.ini files. win 95 itself installed without a hitch. my problems now are basically that several of my windows programs can't find thier dll's and must be reinstalled, not that big a deal actually, my four biggest problems were:

A: the old genius (or was it SUBgenious?)mouse i've had since before dirtdidn't have a driver file that win95 could deal with... i said fuckit and went out and bought a new logitech and said the hell with it... B: the goddamed winmodem (i have a few choice words for the fool at US robotics that thought up this abomination...) that refused to install, the original install diskette had a bug in it and would not install, and the old win 3.11 files were still firmly rooted in the registry and the software couldn't erase the old entries before installing the new ones for some lame stupid reason....

C: and the external zip drive that was conflicting with an old dos sound card driver, had to start reming out the lines in autoexec.and config sys til they worked...

D: and netscape and it's flippin mail password.

so far I've solved three out of four. the mail password is still giving me problems, eventually i will solve it too but i may end up loosing my address book in the process so if some of ya never get any more e-mail from me ever again, that's what happened.....

Ror, there's a big problem, esp if you have rev 2 of the abomiitable and evil, evil Winmodem device (if _I_ ever find the bastard that invented this piece of shit, I WILL indeed tie him to the ground over a fireant bed, get a spiked cork screw, stick it in his ass, pluck his asshole out and pour honey into the gaping hole of his anus to provide a fire-ant feast for weeks!)doing a reinstall. Problem is, that if the winmodem finds ANY file from the previous installtion, it will not install the driver files. We have a file at work that in MOST cases, will nuke the current install of the winmodem files and allow the redetect of 95 to search the a: for new drivers, and install properly. I also have a detailed text file on how to remove these files manually if that nuke files deosn't work. If you want either one, just let me know

Response #67
By: Cleotis
Date: 7/9/98 8:00:49 PM

So far, my "Windows 5.0" experiences have not been good, but I don't think the software is to blame.

I've got this old 486-120 that the kids play MAME on about 17 hours per day. All of a sudden like, Putt Putt and Fatty Bear and Big Bird all started complaining of fatal exceptions and other nasties, so I figured it was a good time to reinstall system. I went to Sam's and bought a copy of Win98 (only $87!), and went for it.

Win98 crashed three times, in different places, because of VGA.DRV.

So, since I really needed a Windows 3.1 test machine for my software anyhoo, I whipped that out and installed it just fine. Windows 95 then installs on top of that just fine. Just when I think it's all said and done, Putt Putt and Fatty Bear and everything else begins complaining of other weirdness once again, and now the video is turning flaky.

I figure I've got a video ram chip that's gone south, but a VLB card with an S3 chipset is hardly worth the hassle of troubleshooting, so I'm just going to start again this weekend with an old Trident ISA bus card and see how things fare with that in.

That is, unless you gurus suggest otherwise...

stupid thought but i have seen this before on a 486-100 so its not as if it is totally unheard of.... this machine had a brand new fresh install of win 95 sr/2 OEM after totally nuking the drive. at random times and usually after five minutes or less of merely booting the machine and walking away, the machine would give the blue GPF error screen and hang. no apparent reason.... after a month or more of three different people pounding thier heads against this problem it eventually turned out that the cpu fan on the heatsink was faulty and was only turning at a fraction of the correct RPM. the chip, already being "pushed" by the manufacturer, was overheating and causing strange divide by 0 errors and such. at 120Mhz... i would expect that heat is an even BIGGER factor here..... check to make sure that you have heat sink grease between the heatsink and the chip and that the fan is turning good and fast, if you can't feel pretty good airflow with your hand, it aint working good....... a side note, the heatsinks that these mom and pop computer shops use are SHIT..... get a good AAVID heatsink and fan (they have a heatsink/fan assy that works GREAT....it comes with double sided aluminum filled conductive heat sink tape to stick it to the chip with.... if you call thier application engineer and make noises like you might be interested in buying a few hundred and ask for a sample, they'll send ya one for nada....)
