ok, this is a two parter.... I'm looking for a vacation spot within driving distance of the big H, preferably with some scenery to go along with it. note, I am MONDO CHEAP.... i ain't got money to burn here... done been to missisippi, done been to san antonio... am thinking of austin but i can't find anything there that really grabs me... (beer is NOT my thing...) needs to have something touristy that will satisfy my 4 year old and my wife (the wife is the harder of the two to satisfy...)

any suggestions?

Little bitty tourist trap town about 45 minutes from Austin called "Wimberley".

Is it Wimberley? Yeah, I think it is.

Get a little cottage on the river and hit the touristy shows and sites and houses-made-of-coke-bottles for a few days.

Brown-bag some sammiches and bring some swim trunks.

Cheap and lotsa fun!

Well, since beer is not your thing, I'm out of ideas.

If you like camping and beautiful scenery, and if you are gonna be up this way anyway, (in Austin that is), also check out Perdenales. Beautiful out there. If you are prone to doing some camping and hiking.

Go camping at Enchanted Rock, near, er.. I think it's Fredricksburg that it's near.

New Braunfels has nifty rivers and a water park, and the best BBQ I've put in my mouth (the guadalupe smoked meat company, which is actually in the nearby town of Greune).

Wait a few months and camp out at TRF (texas rennaissance faire).

Hobo for a while.

Go to Galveston and get a sunburn while pretending to have fun.

Don't go anywhere. Save all your gas money and spend a weekend on the top floor of the Hyatt, having lots of sex and room service. Include excursion to No Tsu Oh.

I like Homer's last suggestion there. Classy hotels often have cheap weekend "romantic getaway" rates. Like, a $300 room for $79.

Check the Omni in Houston -- Mary and I used to do that occasionally.

...but if you're bringing a 4 year old, and sexual excursions with mom and dad aren't her thing, try New Braunfels. There's a water park (Schlitterbahn), yummy food, cheap places to stay, good music, and you can drive to Austin really fast-like (30 minutes) to see me and Spas.

Or, the Fredericksburg thing was my other vote. But Homer done did stole all my ideas.

shlitterbahn sounds cool.... either that or we were considering hitting lake travis and renting a boat for some fishin. but new braunsville (sp? who gives a fuck...) might be a better choice... bout halfway between san antonio and austin.... might even be able to do BOTH.... I'll email yall when we decide what were doing and we'll see about doing something when i hit town.....

I'll check and see if we're playing anywhere, Ror, and post back. What about you, Spas?

Hey, if you're going to San Marcos don't pass by Wonder World!

Do they still have the Diving Pig there (at Wonder World)? I remember being totally enchanted by the underwater strip-tease, climaxed by the pig which dives from great heights to the bottom of the weirdly-decorated pool.

FYI: The cover story for the last FringeWare Review was Wierd Texas. Go get a copy at your favorite Weird Bookstore. FWR is an Austin-based 'zine that is connected to FringeWare, a store in the same city. Go there for BIG AMUSEMENT(tm).

Neener neener! I know more about Texas than any of you, and I don't even live there!

Oh, and there's two outlet malls in San Marcos which makes the prices even LOWER. Or so I've been told.

It's true. And San Marcos is about 20 minutes south of me (says sooz, pointing down I-35).

They should be fine so long as their hides are kept moist.

I passed one of those carriages for $15/15 minutes last night, and I smelled the horse from a long way away. I walked up to Mr. Ed, and said "You smell like a horse's ass." and walked away.

This gave me great satisfaction.
