Just thought I'd ask if anyone here uses an Amiga? I use an Amiga 2000 religiously at home...at work I'm stuck with this PII 266MHz running WinNT 4.0...UGH...

Any thoughts on the Amiga??

I have an Amiga 2000 I'm trying to get rid of. I haven't actually used it in years since my job pretty much requires that I use and am familiar with PCs.

I know Amiga is coming back to life, though. Gateway got the rights and they're working on an x86 "bridge system" with a new AmigaOS and then sometime next year they'll release a real, live new Amiga.

acktcherly, i just recently became the proud parent of an old Amiga 1000. found a mouse for it but still have yet to obtain Workbench floppies or a keyboard. i'm thinking i may be able to use one of the old Macintosh keyboards (128/512/Plus-style) i have laying around with it, as it uses the same RJ-whatever jack and the pinouts i found indicate vague yet promising things, but w/o an OS to boot i've yet to confirm or deny that.

BTW, anyone know what the latest version of the OS i can run on this thing is? and how tightly tied to the ROM is the stuff on the Workbench floppy (that i don't have)? i never really messed with Amigas much, back in their heyday i guess i was more preoccupied with making Quadraphonic recordings of the neighbor mowing his lawn or disassembling telephone equipment or something.

hi Homer!

Hi, r0et!

(Just so you folks know... r0et will send you junk in the mail if you tell him your address. I'm talking a box of Stuff(tm) appearing at your door. Beware. Or enjoy.)

uh-oh. you've just volunteered me for postal pleasure distribution duty. and i'm fresh out of stamps.

i actually haven't released one of my bomboxes of goodies out into the wild in quite some time. in fact... i think the last one i did was that bag-ass assemblage of trinkets i mailbombed Ooola with. there was another one in the works, probably still around here somewhere, tentatively going to Chank Diesel, but he didn't seem to much care for my vodka-induced Cyrillic scrawlage of a typeface, so i sed "phuck 'em".

now that i think about it tho', i *did* make up a large number of "Happy Gift From The Planet Earth!" brown paper party favor lunchbag things. i think they're still all sitting in storage somewhere inside a big sturdy plastic crate stolen from the SouthCentral Bell in New Orleans.

except for one of them, which i stuck up in a tree when i moved out of my old apartment.

this isn't related to Amigas anymore, is it?

Howdy!

Give a shout on comp.sys.amiga.marketplace to acquire Amiga stuff. In fact, I just checked and there's a whole slew of comp.sys.amiga newsgroups.

There's even alt.binaries.amiga.warez...

i actually managed to get my filthy mitts on a complete (i think) set of all the versions of Workbench and dumps of all the matching Kickstart ROMs from one of those newsgroups, but the snag is that in order to get the Workbench stuff onto Amiga formatted disks, i need an Amiga. damn oddball disk format... why did Commodore always have to do that crap? let's go kick Jack Tramiel's ass... yeah!

On the subject of old, out-dated computers.... I just bought a couple of old TRS-80s (model IV & 100) and a complete Atari 800 system for a song. Not sure why exactly, probably just nostalgia, but it seems like a number of people have recently taken an interest in old home computers. But I can't help remembering how much *FUN* those old systems used to be. I mean, computers are all the same these days. Boring, no individual character or style. I guess they don't call 'em CLONES for nothing, eh?

Hmm.... I wonder how hard it is to find parts for old MACs....

old Macs? that depends. here in Houston (which is where i'm assuming many of the other inhabitants of this phine diGitaL corkboard also are presently located, tho' mebbe i'm hallucinating again...)

umm. i just forgot what i was saying.

<ahEm!> oh yeah. here in Houston i've yet to find any worthwhile "computer salvage"-type places. usually i pick up my obsolete technology from the thrift shops, but it's totally hit-or-miss... just depends on what got dumped on 'em that particular week.

if price is no object (i.e. you're not a perpetually broke slacker bum like me) the best place for old Macintosh bits i've found around here is Consumer's Computer Exchange. i forget the exact address, but it's somewhere off of I-10 near Campbell or something. they're in the phone book.

if you're looking for specific parts, those online auctions like eBay and whatnot can be good. or maybe ask Homer if he can find what you're looking for up at RE-PC in Seattle. heh.

and if you're looking for old Macintosh System software, applications or hardware hacking info... i have the most extensive collection of anyone i know. not that i know anyone else who collects that sort-of stuff. but i still have a lot of it, y'know?

okay, now i go pet the kitty...

i am a good home.

thankyou.

For da record, there are a buncha Houstonites on here, roet, but others as well: I'm in Austin, Ralf's near Atlanta, Cleotis is a Nashville-ite, and Homer will be the first to tell ya why he *doesn't* live in Houston, but headed for the west coast. I'm pretty sure hijinx is up there in CleoNashLand, as well.

Well, I think I've got to develop a better understanding of the MAC world before I go out buying old MAC hardware. You know, stuff like, what can I run on a MAC 4/20 LC vs. a Performa 475 or a II VX or PowerMac, etc.... I don't have a firm grasp in my mind on where all these variety of MAC systems rate against each other at the moment. But I may wanna talk to you about software when/if I get some hardware. :)

386, definitely. 286, maybe... i think Slackware Linux might be doable on a 286. hmm.

i dunno about Intellivision, i remember they had those phunky controllers with those little round disc thingers. other than that my memory fails me.

Is there a PC Intellivision emulator?

r0et: The 386 is actually a 486. A Dell 486/50, small desktop case, probably 12meg (guess) of RAM, no hard drive, floppy or keyboard though (PS/2 connector). It works otherwise. The 286 is an NEC, 1Meg RAM, 5.25" floppy, 80ish meg Hard Disk, keyboard (large DIN connection)

Gowan: The Intellivision has several games, don't remember if baseball is one. I think one of the contoller pads is kinda flakey though. Its yours if you want it though.

If I run across any other stuff along those lines as I clean house I'll let ya'll know.

well hell's bells, if yer givin' i'm takin'.

drop me a line and we can go from there.

somewhere i have a bunch of primo emulator URLage bookmarked, but it's presently unaccessable seeing as that computer temporarily blew up. also, the Spice Girls song stuck in my head is preventing me from doing any in-depth web searching, but in the meantime try this Intellivision emu linkage...

http://www.classicgaming.com/vault/iv.shtml

i actually see the Intellivision controllers floating around in thrift shops more often than i see the Intellivision consoles themselves.

>Is there a PC Intellivision emulator?

Why yes, there is - and it works wonderfully.

Only problem is that there are only a handfull of ROMS for it.

If I'm not mistaken, you can find out about it at Dave's Classics.
