Since it seems nobody else is gonna ask, I'll ask.

So Fang...what happened? Was the Nunnery closed last week?

You must be outta the loop.

He doesn't really know. They fiddled and farted around with his hookup and got it to work. Then it didn't work. Then they replaced some wiring and stuff and now it works again.

I think that's it in a nutshell.

OH! Er...ok.

Hey Fang, the way they've got you set up, you're just plugging into an ethernet port installed in your apartment, yes? I bet if you hooked up a network Sniffer and/or some kinda' package like HP OpenView to a PC on that line you could see all kinds of cool stuff on that network.

Heh... Actually Sorc already has said sniffer and software. :>

I just thought it would be interesting to see what's out there. I doubt they've bothered to encyrpt it.

Well, if you've GOT it, get over to Fang's and INSTALL it.

He's not doing anything important anyway.

Sorc: it hosed up because a new bit of freeware/shareware/whateverware CD-ripper-and-MP3-encoder software I was running crashed In A Big Way. Basically I had begun the process of mp3-encoding an entire CD before I went to bed that night, and when I got up in th' morning, I was greeted by a big-assed error dialog box. When I cleared it, Windows Explorer crashed.

By the way, apart from the occasional system-trashing GPFs, this particular CD-Ripper-and-MP3-encoder is pretty darn cool. It's called CDex. It rips directly to MP3 format, and on my 6x CD drive, a 3-minute audio track becomes an mp3 file in about 9 minutes. And it's not that dreadful Xing codec, either.

actually on the subject of fangs net connection, not having placed eyes on it, I'm not 100% on this but I am relatively sure it is a cable modem using ATM protocols... no ethernet here....

Speaking of robust operating systems and web servers, has anyone here tried QNX? http://www.qnx.com/ is the web site (duh) and they have a 'complete internet solution' on a 1.44meg floppy, for a 386 or better with 6 megs of ram.

I'm curious if it works, but I can't exactly try it out, without going to the Salvation Army and buying a PS/2 or something.

Ror: CDex is now in the holding pen. Tadaaa!

And I dunno what sorta magic is in use from the gateway and beyond, but here, inside the apartment complex, it's strictly ethernet.

Which brings me to another point...

Fang, have you received *any* of my e-mails offering The Nunnery Free DNS service?

I've got a buddy that's got a colocated box on top of a nice little connection that'll hang The Nunnery fer free!

www.webnuns.com it a lot easier to remember!

OoooOOOOooohhh! Cool.

Don't you still have to pays your hunnert bucks to InterNic to register the domain?

Another way to do something similar is to register for a free website at WebJump.com and set up a hyperlink there to take you to WebNuns. The added bonus is that if the address ever changes (through a move or a wild gleam in somebody's eye at the ISP) you change only the hyperlink -- everyone using the bbs won't know the difference.

AND you can still get webnuns.webjump.com -- I checked.

(I'm setup as RalfCo.webjump.com, but nothing exciting yet.)

My Weekend Escapade...

Well, packed with good intentions and numerous CD's of software, I went down to ol Houston town this weekend all the intentions of doing a good deed helping some friends of mine with their computer, and going to buy our humble dear and beloved sysop a tatsy malted wheat beverage for his illuterous annual passing of the most momentous day of nine months post sexual product of Fangs' parents hump-fest, I had an obstruction, an altercation if you will, of a metered kind. But I digress... Oh wait, that's probably what I SHOULD do, since I have started this thing.

I had been up all day, driven to Houston, worked on computers for about 5 hours, got a CD burner working and start to drive back to the hotel I was staying at. I stop at Taco Bell on the way to get something to munch on. So I'm driving down Dairy Ashford at 1:30 in the morning, when I have one of my world famous sneezing fits. So here I've sneezed like 5 times in a row. I reach down to get a napkin to wipe my nose, dripping with snot. Next thing I know, I'm bouncing up on a curb. And if this is not bad enough, the real kicker is that I hit one of those damn iron sleeves that houses the water meters. Takes out both my right tires, as well as both my right side rims.

I am so pissed at myself, I walked the 4 miles back to the hotel, carrying my Taco Bell. To speed things up, I get 4 hours of sleep, get up to spend the entire day getting my car towed, (for which I had to wait 1 1/2 hours to go through 3 wreckers services tat said they would be there in 30 min), and getting 2 new rims and tires. So $300 later ($120 for the tow, and $178 for the rims and tires), I finally make it back to the hotel and collapse! I even had to let our beloved sysop down by not fulling my obligation for his beloved froathy beverage.

The Moral of this Story: Don't go to a Taco Bell outside the loop...EVER!

They tell ya about drinking and driving folks, but no one, and I mean no one warns you about sneezing and driving!!!
