Headzup...

Just so's ya know...

I've got to be out of this apartment by June 1st. I'm living in one of the last few unrenovated units in this complex, and they wanna finish up their renovations pretty soon, so, that means one of seven possible things:

1. I could move into a *renovated* unit on this property and pay something like $200 bucks more per month.

2. I could relocate to another property owned by the same management, also with the same type of Internet connectivity, and still pay about $200 bucks more per month, but I'd be substantially closer to my beloved Ale House.

3. I could move closer to the Ale House, *reduce* my rent by about $150, and get set up with the fancy new ADSL service that's supposedly being rolled out any minute now, thus maintaining my web presence.

4. I could actually live in the little tiki hut on the Ale House patio, pay $0 rent, and occasionally access the internet from one of those little cafes nearby.

5. I could look into (gulp) *buying* a townhouse or condo somewhere, maybe break even on the rent/mortage payments, and whatever additional fees are a great big question mark.

6. I could marry a nice career woman and we could pool our incomes and live in River Oaks.

7. I could join the Peace Corps.

So... to sum up, be forewarned that at the very least, my I.P. address is going to be changing again, and at the very worst, the board may hafta go on hiatus for a while.

I propose that you set up a single-line dialup BBS.

A little tiny internet. An ISP of one modem, if you will.

Whatever ya' decide, let me know if you need help moving. If your thinking of ADSL you want to make sure it will supported in that area and findout when the SWBell will be deploying there, their rollout schedule is kinda' funky.

I put my order in for ADSL around the end of February. I was notified by the phone company yesterday that I am close enough to my C.O. to qualify. They will be installing in my area starting April 15th. It's a darn fine deal. For $129/month you get a downlink rate of 6Meg - 1.5Meg and an uplink rate of 1.5Meg - 400K. The ISP service with dedicated 24/7 connectivity and 5 IP addresses is like $50/month. And you don't need a separate phone line either. Voice and data over the same copper pair, simultaneously without impacting your voice or data signal, unlike ISDN.

Unfortunately my ISP (Neosoft) hasn't even got a plan to address ADSL yet so I'm having to move to SWBell as my ISP.

ADSL isn't available in my zip code, yet. When it is, BellSouth will charge me ~$600 for installation, and about $200/month for 6mb/s throughput and a dedicated IP.

Bastards.

If my biz is lucrative enough to justify it, I'll do it anyway. If MediaOne delivers on their empty promises instead, I'll probably have a cablemodem sooner: "only" 600Kbp/s, with occastional squirts up to 1.5mb/s, but shared amongst all the WebTV clickmonkeys in my neighborhood. I can deal, though, since it's only $100 installed and $49/month, INCLUDING premium cable.

Dammit, I'm a customer with cash in hand. Why do they make it so hard for me to spend it?

Ouch! That's way pricey. Check to see if Bell with give you a discount for signing a years contract. In Houston, SWBell will wave the install fee and drop your monthly by about $20 if you sign a year contract. You do have to pay $198 (one time fee) for the NIC and the ADSL "modem" though...even if you already have the NIC.

I'm surprised the price is so high. Atlanta has one of the big backbone nodes, like Houston. Sprint Paranet is building our Remote Operations Center there and I believe is one of the first places we will be rolling out ION (Integrated On-Demand Networking) which needs an installed xDSL base. If you're still shopping in June/July, you might want to see if ION will be available to you and priced more competatively.

I dunno...the price is alot better, but I'm still not much of a cablemodem fan. Cheap, highspeed internet connections marketed out the wazoo by the cable company...I just feel this stuff will be a victim of it's own success. So many people will go online over cablemodem that your bandwidth will get choaked back to 56k modem speeds. Also, when they started rolling cablemodems out in Houston you still had to have a regular modem to carry your outbound traffic. Have they found a way around that yet?

One thing you might want to look at also... When ADSL comes out, it may make ISDN prices come down to where that might be a more attractive option for you as well.

Just some ramblings....

If you are talking in the Houston area, cable modems are on their way. I believe they are already doing early bird sign up in selected areas of town.

MUCH cheaper way to go. :)

Yep, I live in Norcross, GA -- a bedroom community of Atlanta. Nice li'l slice of suburbia.

If I lived within Atlanta I'd have lots of options: SDSL, ADSL, ISDN, two different flavors of cablemodem, and probably a better class of prostitute.

Since I live "outside the perimeter" my options are exactly zero.

Sorc': the $200/month price I was quoted for ADSL *is* for a two year contract. Get this... they won't even install it without a multi-year contract. It's not even an option.

FUCKING bastards.

This is especially galling when one considers that Norcross is Atlanta's high-tech corridor. In addition to the world headquarters for Atlanta Scientific, we've got Lucent technologies' big factory, SAAB's IT department, a huge raft of software development houses (including Peachtree Software, Navision, and Progress's SE headquarters), and a bunch of consumer electronic offices, like JVC, Hitachi and Panasonic. All within 5 minutes of my home.

There's more fiber around here than Nabisco's shredded wheat factory.

And I can't have none.

Just remember if you buy, this is a seller's market, meaning prices are higher. Rates are low, but if the market bottoms out again you could have paid an inflated price, and history here shows townhouses and condos take the longest to recover. With that said, let me know if you need an agent. Smoooch!

So, Fang, the scenario for your nightly outings looks like this: Wander over to Auntie Chang's, eat a plate full of dumplings, wander over to the Ale House, drink more than your fill, puke up the dumplings (they're really attractive after they've been partially digested), and then saunter on home.

I was going to insert Rally's hamburgers in there somewhere, but then I remembered that they went out of buisness.

I love this thing!

I downloaded the Kingpin demo from interplay.com -- all 109M of it. I had throughput of between 132K and 160K bps. That's about the best I've seen, though. Average is around a sustained 64KBps.

I've been listening to realtime streaming 100kbps stereo music.

ArtBell's audio quality still sucks.

Now it's really obvious which sites are megaservers and which are some guy's shared C: drive. :-)

Yech! That sucks though Ralf There are registry tweaks out there, esp if you are running 95/98 that will pick that up for. Unless you ARE indeed hitting some guys C-drive, you should be getting way better than that.

Let me know when you would like to try a test. I 'll set you up an account on my FTP server (since I had to shut down the anon account due to someone passing it around) and we can see what kind of xfer rate you get to something with no traffic. Just to see what you get.

Theoretically it's an old network -- MediaOne's been doing CableModems since 1996 or so. I just think I'm on the rump-end of a load of badly-configured routers and whatnot.

Like plugging your hair-dryer into an extension cord, plugged into a power-strip, plugged into another extension cord, plugged into a 3-way 60-watt bulb adaptor attached to a table-lamp, plugged into the wall.

I'm lucky the lights don't dim when I hit Enter.

But, it sure beats a modem any day of the week!
