With eight legs, they're harder to milk.

Good Lord!
Ya know, for as long as I can remember I've had an occasionally recurring nightmare about finding myself stuck in a giant spiderweb, struggling to break free, as a giant spider slowly makes its way closer... I suspect that dream may actually be *funny* the next time I have it.
I take it this isn't a self-sustaining herd? Like, wouldn't all the leetle baby goats choke to death?

I really wish I had the get-up-and-go to research and corroborate that story, but life is too short.

Sounds about right, there have been some experiments in trying to get "higher animals" to make the stuff in bulk but there is a problem that even this does not appear to solve. making the base elastomer is not all that hard, but putting the "cold work" into the compound as it is cast is the hard part. spinnerettes stretch the elastomer as it is formed which impart strength to the fiber. they have also learned that it is possible to have a fiber made of the proper chemicals bound the same way but without the proper binding geometry the strenght suffers. one wonders why bother. well when you consider that a fiber, 1/4" in diameter is strong enough to stop a 747-400 in mid-flight.......

You mean we could, like, *secretly* tie all of Iraq's military airplanes to the ground.

Pilot: I do not understand. I use full-throttle, and... nothing. See?
Mech: Ah, yes yes yes. Allow me... Ack! Eyes of the Prophet, there are GOATS beneath your aircraft, and they are... they are...
Pilot: What? What is it? I cannot see!
Mech: They are spinning webs from their milk-glands, and causing your aircraft to stick to the tarmac! It must be a sign from Allah! We must stop this holy war and make peace with the Great Satan! I hereby renounce my membership in the Iraqi armed forces, and am delivering notice of my intent to flee the airbase!
Pilot: Nice try. You were conscripted.
Mech: Nuts.

I love it when you need to do a -5 to make sense of a message.

Me too. But alas, Ralf's link to the article went dead, so I've secretly replaced it with another one I found by doing a websearch for +goat +spider.
Hope nobody minds.

Hey! I wonder if they use that goat milk to make string cheese.
