See what happens when ya make fun of geeks? The very next day, you need their help. Considering this, I will completely understand if all the Smarter Than Me people (you know who you are) ignore this plea.

We have a really cool song. It's called "No More Radio," and is about the way music and the music industry is changing. It's about logging on to get your music instead of going to the record store. It's, it's... it needs to be MP3's theme song.

So, I have an MP3 of it. I already put it on our MP3 site... but what's the most effective way to spread it around like a bad case of head lice?

Fire up Napster and put the file in a directory named "Metallica".

He-he. That would indeed be a good way.
Sooz, there's also some really good sites out there where you can upload your MP3's and make your own playlist and promote it. Winamp has myplay. You get 3 gigs online storage with them. Not bad really. Live365 has another similar deal like that, although not quite the same storage space, substancially less. If you have a highspeed connection though, you can run your own little version of your very own "Internet Radio Station" from your own HD on Live365. Just depends on how important it is to have control over your list, and if you are a frustrated DJ. When you run it from your own HD, you really can run it just like a radio station. Complete with announcements and inane DJ chatter.

Usenet newsgroups.

This is where I get almost all of my mp3 music, and oftentimes get exposed to strange and wondrous new stuff I would never hear otherwise.

There are a bunch of different categorized groups under the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3* hierarchy. Subcategories that look like possible winners include:

alt.binaries.sounds.mp3
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.2000s
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.christian
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.dance

DANGER DANGER!

Before attemtping to post any files, I would strongly encourage you to read the FAQ, and skim a group or two for a while to see how it's done. Unfortunately, posting large files to newsgroups is something for which there is not a universal set of instructions. A lot of it depends on your newsreader software.

I would suggest that when you're ready to try posting a file, do it in one of the "alt.test*" groups first. DANGER DANGER! IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT alt.test: Be sure to include the word "IGNORE" in the subject header, or else you'll receive automated emails from news servers around the world as they propagate the messages.

Live365 is cool.. it's nice to be able to say, "yeah, I have a radio station." But realistically no one ever listens to it.

There are currently 16000 stations and only 3000 listeners on a good day.

I *did* get a cool tee-shirt from them though, for being one of the first 1000 (or maybe 5000, I forget) broadcasters.

Yeah, it is pretty cool. You'll be surprised though. Some of those stations get quite alot of traffic. Just think, you could make Beinfang the Wolfman Jack of the Internet.

He-he

Hey Sooz, did you guys check it out yet?
