Apple OS X

Well, I've been intrigued that they'll be releasing an Intel version of the OS, but only now they've released the beta for the long awaited OSX.

I'm curious to see what people have to say about it, but after reading the system requirements, it may be a while before I find someone who can run it.

Apple advises users to have a computer that can spare 1.5 gigabytes of hard-drive space and 128 megabytes
of RAM to operate the beta system, although the final release is expected to require only 64 megabytes of RAM.

Beta testers will also need to possess a Power Macintosh computer with at least a G3 chip and Mac OS 9. Apple
says that any G3 machine (including all iMac and iBook models) except the original G3 PowerBook can run the Mac
OS X beta software.

Apple's just now catching up with Microsoft. :-)

I bet that's the spec for the server version.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/ has at least some of the answers.

Great Ceasar's Ghost! 1.5 GB of diskspace?

So it installs from DVD-ROM only?

FAQ don't say nothing about server version, just Public Beta.

Oh, and Jobs is getting people to PAY for the privilege of running his incomplete software. Sound like anyone else we know?

Hey, it made MS a lot of money... AND cuts down on frivilous Beta participation where thousands of discs are distributed for every one installed.

I know an evil bastard we can ALL hate. Larry Ellison! That weasel's slimier than Gates and Jobs in a tub of butter-flavor Crisco. How many ways can we think of to see him writhe in internal torment?

I don't really care so much about OS X at the moment because it'll be a few years before I can afford a machine to run it on. In happier news, I found a copy of AppleShareIP 5.0 at a thrift store for $7.99. Wewp! Now all I need's DSL...

Still no DSL, but I managed to play with OSX public beta at Macworld SF. It has boingy icons. They boing.

Oh, and I can compile REALbasic apps to Carbon (the OS9-compatible part of OSX). Yay!

Meanwhile, I lust after the G4 powerbook, and instead of getting it, I find a Sparcstation IPC at a thrift store to fulfill my techno-fetishism (at a substantial savings over the G4, I might add). Life is so strange.
