So, included in the spam email with the munged-up headers was the following munged-up URL:
http://402653384/8155
My question is, how the heck is that working?

IP Spoofing? I doan think that's what that is. I suspect they've somehow infiltrated the DNS system with untraceable garbage. Or something.

Some of them will set up DNS servers to send that crap out, then kill it.
It's a way they get around some of the safeguards that ISp's have in place to lock out spammers. If their domain is in "the blacklist", they'll set up a DNS server and route every locally through their DNS server, then kill it before they think they will get caught. If spamcop or someone like that cacthes them, eventually they'll get tracked down anyway.

Kind of like pirate radio stations, but for DNS.
The practice may be abhorant, yet I am impressed.

I have to ask: why spam?
Is it the same logic as telemarketers? Businesses do it because it is cheap and profitable? Are there enough morons out there that actually respond to a spam email to make it financially attractive?

Either:
(a) it's profitable, or;
(b) it's not profitable, but the fact has not gotten from the hind-brain to the fore-brain, and thus spammers continue to ply their trade unawares that it's NOT going to make them feelthy reech. New spammers come into the pipeline just as the old ones give up, perpetrating the cycle. The ones who make all the money are the ones selling bulk emailers and CD-ROM mailing lists.

Actually Roxy, spammers know that with all the new people out there on the net, the one thing they can count on is that people don't always know whar they are looking at, and many of them are very good at making an e-mail look like something you would have asked for or about to get you to open it. Once you open it, they have approxiamtely 3-5 seconds for you to look at enough to grab your attention. If they do, they at least have a chance at getting some poor sucker to bite.
I got a particularly good one that looked just like something, and even referenced something that I had indeed inquired about. Almost got me.

The wierdest thing happened yesterday... I got some spam that I actually checked out.
It was for a company that puts your logo on t-shirts, hats, etc., and I've been looking for that for our band. Their prices were outrageous, though ($16/shirt, $25/mouse pad... yeah right). But it may be the first time I ever responded to spam.

And now you're on 15-gazillion MORE bulk email lists.
Nothing gets spammers more excited than a *verified* email address of somebody that actually responds.
I predict your mailbox will soon become clogged with "MAKE $$$ AT HOME!!!" and "FIRE YOUR BOSS!" and "UNIVERSITY DIPLOMAS FOR CHEAP" and "FIND OUT ANYTHING ABOUT ANYONE" and "HERE IS THE INFORMATION YOU REQUESTED" and "YOU ARE A WINNER!" and "HOT INVESTMENT TIPS" and "CASINO GAMBLING FOR FREE" and "SECOND NOTICE" and "HELLO, DON'T I KNOW YOU FROM...?" AND "UP TO $10,000 A MONTH" and "CHECK OUT OUR SEXXXY SLUTS" and "TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY" and "DON'T DELETE THIS!" and "YOUR FREE GIFT IS READY" and "VIAGRA VIAGRA VIAGRA".
You just wait.

If you filled out anything while you were there, probably so.
Sooz, if you are looking for something like that, have you checked with Vreeland graphics here in town? They are great folks, do great work, and decent prices. Or at least they use to be. They use to be down on Lavaca, I think they are over on Shady lane now. You can of course find them on the web. http://www.vreelandgraphics.com
