ok, so this isn't exactly net related, but its the best fit among the catagories to choose from....
I'm stumped, we have MS Orifice pro v7.0 at work, and about once a day somebody in the office comes to me saying thier spell checker in word has gone off the deep end.... either it ignores the document completely and says nothing is wrong with it even when it is REAL obvious that there is a misspelled word or two, or it will only find a misspelled word if it is highlighted already. but it never stops working in excel. since I'm the tech support person kinda by default, I get to try to figure out what to do. usually restarting win 95 brings the spell checker back. occasionally you have to run scandisk (which reports nothing wrong) to get it to work. sometimes it wont come back that day but will come back the next morning when they boot the machine the next day (but not if they reboot right away...) on three occasions I had to reinstall office completely. anybody have any ideas what is going wrong?

I remember my mom used to call me all the time about MSWord 5.1 spell check. If some text is selected, it only checks the selection unless you tell it to check the whole document.

There's a BIG (7.1MB) service release/patch available for Office97.
That may fix your problem.
The file's Sr1off97.exe.

Another fun thing to do is run the Office97 setup.exe again. Let it "reinstall damaged or missing components".
Won't hurt a working installation; fixes Office97 when somebody's monkeyed with the configuration.
AND, it provides hours of entertainment watching status bars increment...

well, that has been my repair of last resort but i am pretty sure nobody has farted with the settings, they are too scared to. (ya know, the old "evil machine" kinda vibe that computer semi-literate people give thier machines, they know enough to know that screwing around can REALLY fuck things up.... ) I suspect the service release may solve some of the problems, also, i have discovered another factor in this, apparently MS orifice defaults to ignoring words in all caps, toggling this off has cut down alot how often i am rousted to go stroke sombody's machine. not completely mind you but quite a bit.
by the way, do not EVER buy a compaq presario 1010 laptop. it is JUNK. two have had thier connor HD's fail in the last two weeks, and one is running as if it is running at 60 Mhz instead of 120 even though the settings are for 120. these units are used on desktops, they don't get much abuse! they even have external monitors and keyboards! grumble grumble.....

Looking for a laptop? I've found some nice deals at Surplus Direct. Picked up an 800x600 DSTN 150 Pentium with 16 megs and 2.5 gigs for a mere $1199. Then, I bought a 33.6 PCMCIA modem for $69, and a refurbed Canon Laser printer for $199. Great deals over there!
That's also where I bought my two Quantum Bigfoot 6.4 gig HD's that I use as online storage of raw video (as in uncompressed video - not porno video) :-). Got a killer deal on 'em - something like $339 each.
