some or all of you may know that I've been using AT&T for my ISP, I also use them for local and long distance telephone service too. kinda a package deal....
well, they've screwed the pooch THIS time.... they went and changed the access number, e-mailed everyone a warning THE DAY THEY TURNED OFF THE OLD ACCESS NUMBER! they have this 800 number for support that if you follow one branch of the voice mail tree it's supposed to tell you what access numbers are available in your area... well, it didn't HAVE the new numbers programmed in yet. so here I am dialing all day today trying to get onlne but getting a busy signal instead... i finally wade through 20 minutes worth of voicemail and muzak hell to get a guy saying that i should have got an email about it....FUCK! to make it worse.... the email (which I finally got after getting the new number from the tech support guy....) had a typo in it and the new number was WRONG!
I think I'm going to change to flashnet or pdq or something.....
anybody got any suggestions?

All the ISPs in Houston have their good points and their bad points.
I'm currently using WT.NET. I get a pretty good 56k connect, but the only problem I have is that you get cut off at 4 hours. After four hours, you get bumped. You can call right back, but if you're downloading something, you can be screwed.
I've tried Insync, Phoenix and Neosoft, as well.

Yeah Gowan, that's why I dropped Eden here. Nothing pisses me off more than being in the middle of a d/l, and boom! Click! 4 hour bumps my ass!

Does texas.net have a Houston office? I know they're in Austin, Dallas and S.A., and they're $19.95/month with a whole lotta room for your page. You get bumped after 10 consecutive hours. I think that's cuz, if you've been on that long, they've decided you need a life.

Nashville has the best ISP anywhere. "Telalink".
The company is owned by a guy who's in his mid-20's, and their billboards say cool stuff like "We think at T-3 speeds". They do a ton of business work, and they offer dial-up, too. But, hardly anybody uses them. They're a whopping $35 a month, but worth every penny... Got a tech problem? Call them up and talk to the guy who runs their servers. Pissed about one of their policies? Call the owner and moth off about it. There's not a lot of companies where you can do that. The only downside is that they only give you 150 hours per month. Being an IRC junkie, I regularly run over. They've yet to charge me for it.
Oh, yeah. You get 10 megs of unmetered web space, too. That's where I run my Mad Cam from.

Texas.net keeps a VERY close watch on the traffic to their web istes. They kicked a friend of mine off their server just because his site was getting "alot of traffic" And it wasn't even a porn site!

Texas.net has a very bad reputation.
Check out houston.internet.providers some time.

Houston Internet Connect is pretty good - except I can never get perfect 33.6 connection, they have good newsgroup maintanence and can handle a large amount of e-mail though...
I also go through Insync. Good connection, good newsgroup maintenance, but lousy support.

I have pdq.net. Its pretty reliable. But I just switched to a yearly plan. Would you beleive that a couple of weeks after I switched, I got an email about long connections. My son uses this account to and he stays on quite a lot. They said we had 100 hours over a 14 day period. SO??????? I was very nice. I did not reply. How rude, advertise unlimited access, get the bucks, start bitching!!! If I didnt have a year of that crap, Id switch right now.

Everyone's revising their "unlimited access" policies lately. They say they either have to raise rates to keep up with the demands for bandwidth and connect time or limit connect time.
So, they're doing it to HELP you.
Yeah. Uh huh.

Back in the days when I was dialin' up, I was pretty pleased with Netcom.
So pleased, in fact, that I still maintain that account for nothing but email.
I also used to stay connected for 8 hours a day when I was telecommuting to Atlanta.

That sounds like me and AOL, Fang. AOL was actually a decent place to play before they started getting huge. Now, I just keep the account open for e-mail and newsgroups, and do they Bring Your Own Access plan for $9.99 a month.
