Over the holiday weekend, my power supply, mother board and processor passed away. In the process of redoing everything, the "computer guy" formatted C:/. So, I need Netscape again. No problem, thought I: I'll just use IE to download it.
So guess what? The IE that comes with 95 will only let you d/l 12K at a time (why? who knows?). The newest Netscape is 14K.
Whatever can I do? I'm not going to purchase IE4.

Umm.. I don't know what the problem is, but that's not it. I'll assume the "K" represents a megabyte.. :) I've downloaded files in the 30-40 megabyte range without problems using IE4, and the one that comes with Windows *is* the full product.
Are you downloading this from www.netscape.com? I see they've got a utility called "SmartDownload" which you install first, and it's supposed to let you start, pause, and resume downloads if the connection is broken.
Failing that, I'd be happy to sell you a copy of *my* IE4 for a very reasonable price... :)

Win95 or Win98?
If you gots Win98, you gots IE4.
Besides, you don't have to BUY IE4. It's free. You can download it from Microsoft.
I have no idea what your problem is, either. (Well, I have a FEW ideas, but not about THIS problem) It doesn't sound like anything I've encountered before.
So, it starts to download Netscape and when it gets to 12MB, it just craters?

Maybe Micky$oft has a rig built into IE to "discourage" people from downloading from Netscape?
I hate the thought of someone going to a Micky$oft browser because they can't download the good one. :)
Hey Sooz, you got a CD-ROM drive in your PC? E-mail me a shipping address & I will burn you a CD with Netscape Communicator on it and send it your way post haste. DON'T GIVE IN TO THE DARK SIDE!!

You guys are so sweet. (Fang's right, though... K, meg, I dunno the difference.)
At any rate, I was using the IE that came with 95 to d/l the Netscoop (or Nutscrape, whatever), not IE4. I was even doing the Smart Download dealie, but it was still recognizing that I was trying to get one file that was bigger than it's 12 limit.
I finally got the ol' FTP client out (at a friend's suggestion... *I* didn't think of this) and got Netscape 4.5 that way. I feel more better now.
IE4 is free? I've heard so much wonderfulness about it... but will it let me import my mail, address book and bookmarks?
And thanks, Sorc', for the offer. You guys give me the warm fuzzies all over. Or maybe it's this old coffee cup with the warm fuzzy things in it. I dunno.

FTP is your friend. Small, simple, damn near universally available.

FTP is my enemy. It uses THREE SOCKETS!

But NOW (the saga rambles on), my Nutscrape crashes about twice a day. I'm thinking of switching to IE4. Sigh.

Lets just say MicroSoft is one of those corporations that, IMHO, has gone beyond being a Free Market success story to being a Free Market millstone. Out of over probably 600 analysts and technicians in our Houston office (a good number of them MicroSoft Certified), you'll only find a small handfull who have great confidence and belief in MS and the quality of their products.
A co-worker of mine (an MCSE+I as it turns out) put it very well at a company meeting once. "None of our customers go Microsoft because they think its the best technical decision, they do it because thats what the other guy is doing. That's what another CIO told them to do at the last conference he/she attended. Or they believe, wrongly, that if your going to use MicroSoft apps in one place, you really need to run MicroSoft everywhere." An exaggeration to a degree, but it has a solid core of truth to it.
So, I'm just doing my small part to agitate against MS and make sure other options are available. A role which isn't counter to the ZenRepublican Free Market Principle(TM), as a matter of fact it's almost a requirement. ;)

CSS = Cascading Style Sheets. An attempt to make web pages less dependant on what browser is being used.
