In the same vein as the venerable "what are you listening to now?" thread, I'd like to know about the last music you bought.
Not what you're listening to now, not what you nabbed off Napster, not what you heard on the radio/streaming-whatever... what was the last CD or vinyl disc you actually paid for?
Me, Thievery Corporation: DJ-Kicks. Just this past week.

No, seriously.
Before that, I don't remember, maybe an independent album, dArIn by Darin Murphy.

Didn't this thread happen about a year ago? :-)
Negativland and Chumbawumba's 'ABCs of Anarchism,' which is OK if you like the feeling of being dropped into a blender with about twenty three different media sources.
Art of Noise's 'The Seduction of Claude Debussy,' which is nice. I wanted more actual Debussy, but instead got a few tracks featuring some rapper comparing himself to Baudelaire, which Just Doesn't Work.
Speaking of fin de ciecle French composers, I got a CD full of orchestral works by Eric Satie which includes Parade, Trois Gymnopedies, Mercure, and Relache. Reasonable recording, OK performance, interesting in a historical sense. (Satie was an inspiration to Debussy, and I'm gaga over Debussy.)
And just the other day, a friend gave me the CD he's been working on. Some of the folks from the now-defunct Joint Chiefs formed a band called Cheek, and the resulting CD, 'Sweet Metallic Sheen,' is pretty good, in that independent straight-ahead hard pop kind of way.

Wasp Star: Apple Venus Vol. II is quite the tuneful happy-making CD.
I finally got ahold of Manu Chao's Clandestino on CD, and it's also tuneful and happy-making.
Also David Sylvian's 'Approaching Silence,' which is stunning, if you're into ambience.
Also, a recording of never-before-recorded compositions by Claude Debussy, which have been orchestrated by Debussy's contemporaries. And now we know why they've never been recorded.
Also, Steve Reich's 'Music for 18 musicians' which is also stunning, if you're into extremely repetitive music.
Also, African Head Charge's 'Songs of Praise,' which is their first CD, and which should be on heavy rotation on nunz radio.
Also Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon' which is walks a fine line with its atmospheric country grace.
Also California Guitar Trio's 'rocks the west' live album, which features their covers of bohemian rhapsody and Beethoven's 9th symphony, and you haven't lived until you've heard three guys with guitars play these pieces.
All in all, too much money spent at the record store.

AV Vol II, I can't quite decide if I like it that much or not.
It's...ok.
But it somehow seems like it's lacking that zing, that edge that Vol I had.

No, but if ya find one, I'd like to know about it too.
My primary means of discovering new music is to skim the usenet newsgroups for mp3s, sampling the flotsam and jetsam until I find something that catches my interest. Then I'll either go to CDNow and search for more info/reviews there, or else I'll just do a Yahoo search for the artist.
'Course, this method is ideally suited for a high-speed internet connection, and is probably painful as pulling teeth if you're using a 56k modem. But if this sounds intriguing, give a hollar and I'll try to post some sort of Usenet newsgroup mp3-skimming primer.

I'm always on the hunt for good music review sites. But I always end up back at Amazon or CDNow. Ack.
I want something more... more... hmmm... well, listener-based, I guess. NOT based on the companies wanting to sell music and letting people post reviews. More like a site where anybody can post a critique of *any* group, and you can do a SEARCH by group name, and read reviews on them, etc...
I'm sure there's something out there. I just have too crazy of a schedule to do much in the way of real research.

Got a great new album from Amazon yesterday. Woo!
GOLDFRAPP - Felt Mountain
Unbelievably unique. It continually amazes me how people can make ORIGINAL music, in this day and age.
This CD is dope! The music starts off (and fades in and out of) spooky, haunting stringed riffs. The singer also takes her presence in and out of the composition. Most times, she is singing in a WHISPER.
Through the haunting sounds of violins and other stringed instruments, bizarre otherworldly sounds make brief appearances - things that bleep, pluck, and scream. Some of the riffs would make a good soundtrack for Star Trek episodes.
Fabulous stuff. Both great for background music (for when friends are over) and for serious listening.
I was supposed to see them in concert at The Crocodile Cafe in Seattle but I got word yesterday that the show was CANCELED. Booo!!! :-(

I hate live recordings. You got that audience noise thing going which REALLY bugs me. The sound isn't usually great at a live recording, either.
The only exception that comes to mind is those MTV Unplugged recordings where it's the artist playing live and hardly any crowd noise at all.
(None of these rules apply to "Peter Frampton Live!")
YMMV

it is hard to sing to live recording though, since sometimes they change the songs. besides, playing a live album on shuffle play is quite annoy because the crowd noise tends to be mixed between the tracks, so you get these annoying jumps

Witch: It was easy to ignore Sheryl Crow at the concert in question because she hadn't developed her stage presence yet. She was obviously talented, but she hadn't hit it big; this was literally about a week before "All I Wanna Do" hit the charts. Hell, yeah. Bluegrass rules.
And Homer, didn't jazz originate here, as well? I know they had some forms of it in Europe (called "gypsy" music), but it was a lot more freeform and had a latin sound (latin-gypsy-jazz, I guess).
Also, rap originated here. But I wouldn't call that a musical idiom.

No, I didn't run over any old ladies. Sheeesh. Only dogs and cats.
Actually, at one point, I was driving around some people who were turning, and all of a sudden, we were four-wheeling it, because I thought the "potholes" were so huge (which is NOT out of the ordinary for Washington). But then Homer said "Those aren't potholes. You're actually driving off-road." I looked and sure nuff, we was on the sidewalk!

Okay, I just bought Alicia Keys - Songs in A Minor. She sounds like a 19-year-old female Prince (or The Artist). While her CD just topped the charts, and she'll probably be considered Top 40 now, she's quite talented and deserves a nod for Best New Artist. She's original, she has talent, and she's a smart cookie (saw her in an interview recently). I love this album. It's slow funk, with some rap and R&B mixed in.

Nope. I don't see a difference, either. I'm with Sooz.
I don't even find teenage boys attractive, to be honest. For me, attraction starts with intellect. Brad Pitt could walk up to me and tell me he wanted me, but if he was STUPID, I wouldn't give him a second glance, and I'm not talkin' smack here. For me, it's all about brains. Maybe that's why, since I was a teenager, I've liked older men.
Perhaps it's the way of nature. Women like older men. Men like younger women. Hmmm. But then why are men in their sexual prime at 18, and women at 35? That doesn't seem fair.
Response #148
By: bob

Response #150
By: sooz

I guess the line between "finding someone attractive" and "being attracted to" is a little confusing. I see where Bob's coming from... I think my mother-in-law is an attractive woman, but I'm not attracted to her sexually. And she'd probably be glad to hear that.
Now, as for Gowan the Gay... I once had a long discussion with someone about the whole "can you be born gay" thing. Turns out, the only thing we were disagreeing on was the definition of "homosexual." He thought you had to be having sex to be homosexual; I believed you merely had to be attracted to someone of the same sex to be homosexual. So, for clarity's sake, from www.dictionary.com:
ho·mo·sex·u·al (hm-sksh-l, -m-)
adj.
Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex.
n. Usage Problem
A homosexual person; a gay man or a lesbian.
Usage Note: Many people now avoid using homosexual because of the emphasis this term places on sexuality. Indeed, the words gay and lesbian, which stress cultural and social matters over sex, are frequently better choices. Homosexual is most objectionable when used as a noun; here gay man and gay woman or lesbian and their plural forms are called for. It is generally unobjectionable when used adjectivally, as in a homosexual relationship, although gay, lesbian, or same-sex are also available for adjectival use. See Usage Note at gay.
homosexual adj : sexually attracted to members of your own sex [ant: bisexual, heterosexual] n : someone who practices homosexuality; having a sexual attraction to persons of the same sex [syn: homo, gay]
Bisexual is the same thing, but with both sexes, etc.
Now, where were we?

Humans evolved their sexuality in a world where living past 25 was a miracle. An 'older man' would be 25 or so in this world, and a man who had lived that long would represent a better set of genes than one who was younger and more unproven. Hence, women want older men. A younger woman would be more likely to bring a child to term and raise it, so men prefer younger women.
It's simple. :-)
Our genes aren't as modern as we are.

There's something I never could figure about being homosexual. Lesbian women tend to make themselves more masculine; gay men tend to make themselves more feminine. So what's the point of being gay if you are just going to end up with someone who acts like the opposite sex anyway?
Response #156
By: sooz
Date: 1/15/02 7:55:21 AM
Disclaimer: I'm not saying all gay folks have been molested, thus making them gay. I'm giving one isolated case.
I know a person who was born male, and had a sex change as an adult, and is now a lesbian. She explained to me that she was repeatedly sexually molested by a male family member as a child. Thus, the idea of a penis is so repulsive to her, she doesn't want to have one or be near one. She acts pretty dikey, just because she's not inherently frilly. But penises? No thanks, for her.

All I can say is that I do NOT have penis-envy.
As for Roxy's comment... I have always wondered that, too! If I were to be a lesbian, I'd be a lipstick lesbian, because why would I want a dyke, when I can have a MAN? (Okay, shoot me, if you will, but REALLY here, folks. What's the difference, other than a penis/vagina.)

I can also understand what sooz' friend experienced. At least he/she *had* an explanation for their decision.
I don't think I have penis envy either. I don't need a penis, cuz I got balls!!! Yep, I'm a ballsy chick! Eeeuuwww, that doesn't make for a pretty picture...

There's a HUGE difference besides penis/vagina. There's breasts, for one.
But besides, women (even dikey women) are softer and cuddlier. Men tend to be more "hard-body" sorts, with muscles and angles, instead of curves. They have scruffy facial hair, and a different smell.
It's not like dykes decide they don't want to be girly-girls. Probably, they're just not naturally girly. A lot of us girls aren't.

Response #165
By: Roxanne
Date: 1/16/02 3:15:42 PM
Oh, I don't know, I think it still comes down to the penis/vagina issue. Since you can find soft cuddly guys just as easily as you can find hard-bodied angular gals, there's got to be some other reason for sexual orientation. And for as much as I may find some women attractive and sensual, when it's time for the "down and dirty", I like penises better than vaginas. (I could get alot more graphic, but I'll behave myself...this time) ;)
Response #166
By: bob
Date: 1/16/02 3:51:27 PM
that is ok roxy, i am sure most of us are dirty minded enough to form all the graphics ourselves. but i do agree with your point, there is something that is different, but i am not sure what it is, either. perhaps it is feramones (even if they are spelled wrong). i really don't think that it is an issue of how you are raised, at least not in most cases
Response #167
By: WitchHazel
Date: 1/16/02 4:15:13 PM
Yeah, I'm with Rox. I know some wonderful, soft, squishy guys with breasts. I also know some hard-bodied, flat-chested females. Not all dykes are soft and squishy, for sure.
To me, it's absolutely all about the person. For me, stimulating conversation is a powerful aphrodisiac. If a man OR a woman is a fabulous conversationalist, I might actually start imagining what kinds of things they might say in the bedroom (for one example). It's not all about LOOKS that attracts me. However, it HELPS, of course.
I'm sure there ARE bull-dykes that I would find attractive SOMEWHERE. But I would think that I would tend to gravitate toward a lipstick lesbian first, even though I, myself, am probably 75% female/25% male. (I certainly ain't no "LADY".)

By: Homer The Brave

Sex is either in your genes or on your body. Count the
Y chromosomes or count the penises (0 for female, 1 for male).
Gender is everything else, from whether you're supposed to play with dolls to how much money you make doing the same job.
Some folks say that sex is just derivative of gender, which is to say that we define sex in the first place so we know what gender roles to use. I think it's a weak argument, but there it is.
Also, there are some folks who say that there's no 'opposite' sex, and there's no 'opposite' gender. I think this is a strong argument. Witness our discussion of bull dykes and sissyboys. Bull dykes are neither girl-gender nor boy-gender; they are their own category of gender. What's the opposite of bull dyke?

I've probably spouted this theory before, but it's just an extension of what Homer's saying, which makes perfect sense to me. A doctor I once worked for told me he believed this:
Let's say we each get 100 gender genes. Some guys have about 99 male and 1 female, meaning they can possibly cry at their own mother's funeral, but that's about it... otherwise, they're all macho.
Then there's my sissy boy friend, who's buff-as-hell (has modeled in magazines), but can break into a swish REALLY fast. He's probably 70 girl/30 guy.
I guess in our family, Richie and I are both about 65/35. He does most of the domesticated things (cooking, cleaning), and I like to make money. He decorates the house, and I get the oil changed. He's not nelly though, and likes NASCAR and fishing. I'm not TOO dykish (I think), and I like Winnie the Pooh and fields of flowers. But I don't wear makeup or jewlery hardly ever.
So I'm with Homer, for a change... gender, it's in your mind. Be who you are, and don't worry what category you're in.
So what % are you, everyone? Huh huh huh?
Response #176
By: WitchHazel
Date: 1/18/02 10:19:14 AM
70 - 75% female. It fluctuates. I love make-up, cooking, and getting pedicures, but I also love beer (but I'm a beer snob -- no Miller Lite for ME), I love to drive cool cars (and FAST!), I like sports (some), and in the summers, I'm kind of a "mountain man" (only a woman!). The rest of the year, I'm a city chick.
So, I really like a little of both. ;-) Variety is GOOD.
