OK, so I take it this love for Shiner Bock which most of us have comes from your citizenship as a Texan, but I'm a native Tennessean and I love the stuff, too.

I post this to open discussion about beer...not just any old beer, but good, high quality beer. Any suggestions for me or others to try are very welcome.

Might I suggest, for starters, Bohannan's Brew (Rasberry Wheat).

OK, now, beer me.

Murphys Irish Amber is a gift from the gods...or the ale house...I often confuse the two....

Sorry, I gotta disagree on the Murphys, I mean come on, ya clean wood with it.

Oh, the beer...

Seriously, that Murphys Red I tried was probably one of the worst brews to touch my lips.

Hijinx, I think Bohannon's is just a Nashville thing. I sent a couple to my pal LedHed, and he wasn't impressed. I still dig their blackberry wheat, though - in small doses.

Shiner Bock is da bomb.

There's a great little microbrewery here in town that I've been spending more and more time in, though. It's cool because it's a restaurant with really great food, so we take the kids with us. "Blackstone" on West End. They've got a really nice Chaser Pale ale.

How 'bout Mickey's big mouth? (No, Hijinx, not your wife - the fizzy crap in the little green barrels)

Murphy's Irish Stout, Jaka claims, is like a beer-flavored milk-shake. Though this sounds horrifying, it's actually delicious.

When we were on our honeymoon in Ireland, we learned to appreciate Guinness. This is how. You walk around in London for miles and miles, with insuffucient rain gear, and 70 lb. exterior frame back packs strapped to your back, in the cold and the wet, until your own internal bitterness factor is higher than that of the beer. Then you sit down in a nice warm pub, and enjoy your Guinness stout.

so fang which beer would drive you to bar stool conquest? not that it really matters one way or another...I can't stand the taste of beer personally, the only one I can even remotely stomach is michelob which ain't saying much. I really haven't found the urge to try any of the microbrews... just seems kinda pointless to me.

This thread prompted me to go to Kroger's and pick up a six of those little green barrels.

Man, those dogs pack a punch!

You'd hafta be REALLY thirsty to wanna drink those things.

At least they were only $4.09 for a 6-pack, so I'm not out much.

I've found that, as I get older, I can't drink like I used to. I used ta could (good TX saying there) drink 4-6 beers, and/or several margaritas. The other night I went out with a friend, and after 1 margarita, she was suddenly the most amazingly hilarious person in the universe to me.

My beer experiments will have to go slowly, is what I'm sayin'. Of course, I could always mooch off my multiple alcoholic neighbors.

Beer. Well, personally, I like beer. A lot of different kinds of beer. Lately, however, I've been partial to Dundee's Honey Brown and Genny's Cream Ale.

I used to drink Little Kings Cream Ale like there was no tomorrow.

I'd really like to tour the Shiner brewery, but they're only open during the week!

Note to self: Go to Austin, buy Susan top-shelf margarita, make sure hotel room is reserved.

Where to begin?

Mickey's BigMouth is wonderful! Try it as a chaser for your favorite stout.

I keep returning to Shiner Bock like an old friend. It's my compass in a crazy mixed-up world. Once I found it on tap here in Atlanta, it stopped those wild-eyed late-night car-packing experiments to see if we really COULD move back to Texas in one trip.

My current favorite SPECIES of beer is India Pale Ale. Current favorite brand is Spanish Peaks IPA (black labrador on the label, motto: "No Whiners."). Yummy.

My favorite brewpub of all time is probably the Waterloo in Austin. Runner-up, Gordon Biersch in Honolulu, Hawaii. Great beer, excellent ambiance, incredible garlic-fries.

Big River in Nashvegas is the junk...I had my bachelor party there...Blackstone is atreat as well, though.

We used to get pitchers of Shiner Bock at Johnathans, but they water their beer down, so I quit going there.

Bastards...

Say Ralf, which Waterloo? And if you make it back up here sometime, let me know. A few good pubs that are near and dear to my heart.

As far as in Houston, The Alehouse will always be my favorite. Don't know whether it was the place, or the company, but I always had a goodtime there. May have just been both!

Er... (rampaging thru long-dormant memory banks)... I don't remember.

The only one I know is THE Waterloo Brewpub, which was the first brewpub open in Austin once they changed the laws to permit them. It's got a huge neon sign outside, and crappy parking. It's on the periphery of the entertainment district, near an open park. The address escapes me; it's been five years. I know it's still thriving, though, cuz we had lunch there last year during an overnight visit. :-)

I just typed this in a different thread, but check out the Dog & Duck pub in Austin. It's not a british pub per se, but it tries, and the ambiance is spookily like the Ale House. We found it shortly after moving to Austin from Houston.

So where are you at Ralf? In Austin or Houston? (Confused!)

Yeah, you must be talking about the one downtown not too far from the Music Hall then. Yeah, they have quite a few Waterloo's strown arounf town now. Hell, there's 2 of them downtown alone now. Although the other ones aren't brewpubs, they just serve it there.

I have a good friend and almost net.lover near Atlanta. She told me her field of specialization was 'neurotheology,' and I immediately fell in love. Neither of us could deal with the three time-zone difference tho.

Sigh.

Ralf, if I come visit, will you go with me to see Howard Finster's nifty little studio/sculpture garden?
