Pardon me for asking this horrendously geeky Windows question, but I have my reasons.

Quick survey, you Windows95/98 users:

Are you running at least 800x600 resolution? How many colors?

Go to a blank spot anywhere on your desktop and RightClick. Select properties and the Display Properties window comes up. Select the Setting tab and there you have it.

1024x768 at 8-bit color when doing Director stuff, 16-bit color when I'm not doing Director stuff.

...on a .39dp 17" monitor. My eyes are killing me. I gotta lose this dog monitor.

Windows 95 640x480 256 colors. And the monitor squeals for about 30 minutes when ya turn it on, and sounds like a leaky oxygen tank.

I think it's time for a monitor.

Response #14
By: Da Sissop

It's probably propane. Don't breathe it. Is it one of those new "Energy Star" monitors?

Response #15
By: Ralf
Date: 9/8/98 7:54:51 AM

Strike a match on the screen and stand back. If it explodes, it's propane. If it burns with a clean blue flame, it's natural gas.

Gowan: how can I get a copy of your Arkham theme, please?

Next question: does everybody have a sound card of some kind?

What?

I have *two* sound cards.

Of course, only one is actually in my machine.

I'm thinking about switching cards, though. I don't know which one is better, though.

SB AWE32 or a Turtle Beach Monterey MultiSound.

Anyone know?

I can point you to the theme or mail it to you. which do you prefer?

Both. If I start the day in boxers, I keep a pair of briefs in my briefcase in case I need a change of pace in the afternoon.

Boxers when dressing to the left.

Briefs when dressing to the right.

Right now, it's not an issue. Make of that what you will.

oOO! I got one!

Fasten then zip, or zip then fasten?

Fasten, then drive to work, then get a cup of coffee, then give a Powerpoint presentation in front of the Board of Directors, then zip.

By: Ralf

Fasten, then break zipper. Curse creatively. Drive home with hand over crotch. Change pants. Return to work.

(Yep, this really happened once...)

The "frank and beans" scene from Something About Mary comes to mind.

By the way, if you've not already wasted any money on this horrible movie (in spite of rave reviews) - DON'T.

By: Homer The Brave

Fasten. Go downtown to talk to crazy street bums. Notice open zipper. Break zipper. Curse creatively. Walk a block to Goodwill. Buy new pants.

(Yes, this really happened once, too.)

ah! but has anyone here gone to work, met with an important client then realized his (or her) shirt is on inside out? I'm not joking, it happened to me.... I'm gonna have to stop getting dressed in the dark....

Speaking of monitor resolutions...

My pain-in-the-ass monitor finally bit the big bucket and will require $539 dollars to revive. I think I can get a new 17" for that price, and still have enough to go buy an ice cream cone.

I've pretty much settled on the NEC E700. Anyone have any horror stories about said glass box?

Response #40
By: Da Sissop

...and there, protruding from the busted front of the NEC E700, was a single... bloody... hook!

Response #41
By: Homer The Brave
Date: 9/27/98 2:04:31 AM

Golly... I guess I'll go with the 15" one instead. It seems less threatening.

And let me just say to each and every one of you... If you're the bastard that wrote the Autostart virus, I'd like to introduce you to my friend Bart who collects guns.

Response #42
By: rorschach
Date: 9/27/98 12:55:44 PM

no horror stories on that particular model but I am not a fan of NEC's monitors either. NEC generally wants to not put anti-glare coatings on the outside surface of thier monitors, I understand why, it decreases the sharpness and lowers the brightness a tad, but unless you work in a pitch black office with no windows, the glare can really give you a major pain (literally). for that kind of money, I say go down to microcenter and get a 17" viewsonic, alot cheaper than NEC (you can get a 21" for the price of a 17" NEC) and equal if not better quality (viewsonic USED to suck but they've gotten alot better) and not nearly the glare problems.

Before you spend the bucks, check out www.pricewatch.com for some awesome prices on 17" monitors. For $500 you can get a kick-ass 19" monitor.

Homer's Monitor Quest, UPDATE:

I got a call today from a friend who said that his place of employment was throwing out three broken monitors. So sez I, hold on to them, and I'll come pick them up.

They're all really crappy old Apple monitors (two are Performa branded), but THEY ALL WORK. Apparently the IT department wanted new monitors, so they said that these didn't work. So now I'll just get a kickass 15" and a video card for exciting twin-monitor fun.

And if any of you need a slightly beat-up 14" Performa monitor (for that ultra-hip dumpster-diving 'cyber' look), let me know.
