Tell me if this sounds like a worthwhile endeavor:
Many times as I'm skimming through the Yahoo! news I'll see a story I'd like to add a snide comment to. Now, in the *past* I would either cut-and-paste the text into a new post here, or else I would paraphrase and put a link to the original Yahoo! file in the message.
But I got to thinkin'... I *could* actually pirate the newsfeeds from selected Yahoo! categories so that they could be read here as a part of your ReadAll/ReadNew process, complete with an add-a-reply box like your standard Nunnery messages. Then, if anyone actually adds a reply, the original text could be saved here locally as an official Nunnery post & thread, for posterity and all that.
I'm also thinkin' that something like this might usher in the need to add functionality like some sort of subscribe/ignore feature, since you might not *want* to wade through Yahoo! news on every ReadAll/ReadNew. Or *any* ReadAll/ReadNew, for that matter.
Thoughts? Opinions? Better idears?

personally, i like the fact that the news snippets on the board tend to be the creme de la creme, so you don't have to wade through brutality in kosovo in order to get to the funny stuff.

You forget...at the Nunnery the brutality in kosovo can be the funny stuff.

What about a separate "read all news"?

In that case, you might as well go to yahoo and get the news there.

Well no, if I just went to Yahoo, I couldn't post individually like he's talking about.

ah, that's an idea, have it so you could choose to read all the news, or else just the news that people have made responses to..

So, like, I was poking around on http://my.userland.com/ and apparently the sysop of that system has managed to do just exactly what The Fang is talking about, and it kind of sucks, but it's also kind of interesting.
FYI.

Hmm... I just poked around in it briefly, and unless I'm missing something, I don't see any option to add snide comments to anything.

The newsfeed part. Not the snide comments.
Of course, maybe the snide comments never happened because there was newsfeed-overwhelm on the users' part. Maybe there's a lesson here.
Probably not, though.

Would you like a snide of comment sauce to go with that?

Most of the news is so unreal it's difficult to satirize.
And the average AOL/WebTV user doesn't have the quick wit coupled with poor impulse control we exhibit here.
It'd probably work HERE, but not everywhere is what I'm saying.

Nah. Each discussion would dissolve into "My computers better'n your computer" if it happened here.

So???? Would just give us more options than the message groups we have now. I still think it would be a great idea.
Kinda reminds me of the Zippy filter.
You guys have seen the Zippy filter right?

I have a Zippo lighter that I found. The trouble is, I usually need a lighter to light a *pipe*, and the flame from a Zippo just doesn't taste very good through a pipe.
Oh, and for some reason, this reminds me of PursuitWatch. Maybe because Ralf said the news was so unreal it was hard to satirize.

Good call -- I can't tell if PursuitWatch is a real service or a parody.
For about 4 bucks you can get a refillable, butane pipe-lighter at your favorite head shop. Mine's made in Austria.

I think PursuitWatch is real. Or at least, as real as it can be, given its firm roots in the land we call surreal.
