Can I ask a favor of somebody?

Would one or more of you kind people who use Internet Explorer try out the "Orgy of the Dead" quotes from the main menu, and find one with the RealAudio logo, and click the logo, and see if you can hear the RealAudio sounds?

It ain't working for me under IE5, but judging from the error message my RealAudio player reports, it *looks* like it's an issue with my IE browser's cache.

Okay, well, from what I gather now, it's *not* my browser's cache. I've been dickin' around with the MIME type settings under Internet Information Server, but so far to no avail...

Under the old WebSite Server, the MIME type for a realaudio file (*.ra) was "application/x-pn-realudio", and when you clicked the link your browser would download the file and then it would launch and play. Ah, those were the days!

Under IIS, the default MIME type was "audio/x-pn-realaudio" and it worked for Netscape browsers, but IE had funky stuff happening where, say, if the original filename was "foo.ra", it would be looking in the cache for "foo(1).ram", which didn't exist because IE apparently just PULLED THAT OUT OF ITS ASS!!1!!4!!

Ahem... pardon me...

So, the nifty Orgy of the Dead audio links are hosed, I guess, until I can figure out what's wrong. Meanwhile, they can still be "Saved As..." by right-clicking on the link.

That's interesting. Microsoft's Internet Information Server doesn't work right with Microsoft's Internet Explorer.. How ironic. hehe

IE ignores the server's MIME type in a lot of cases, and acts on the .ext part of the filename instead. Swell.

Whattaya expect? RealAudio is a direct competitor to WindowsMedia.

Yah, but the problem isn't isolated to realmedia.

And while I'm in bitch mode, IE 4.5/mac likes to screw up all your hard-won settings on the Internet control panel. So bleagh.

If we're bitching, then: RealAudio snatches away all my file associations whenever it's invoked. It wants to pump my MP3's thru its crummy "Jukebox" instead of WinAmp.

I found the switch that supposedly turns this "feature" off, but it still does it occasionally.

Grump, grump, grump.
