I went to see this thing tonight.
George Clooney plays George Clooney, looking the same as he does in every other role.
Mark Wahlberg (wasn't he Marky Mark back in the day?) is dandy, as is the rest of the cast.
And the effects! Yowza! Waves everywhere... very exciting. Whoosh, whoosh... made me want to go to the bathroom, yessier, I tell ya what.
The plot, though based on a true story, was a little too close to Bruce Willis' Armageddon for me. Upstart rogue takes on impossible task against nature to prove something, endangering his crew along the way... and there's an attractive woman that's not exactly part of the crew, but not exactly not, either. Yeah, yeah.
However, it was the ending that got me.

The friend I went with knew the ending, as she'd seen "The Making Of The Perfect Storm," and heard the true story on which the thing was based. I, however, didn't.
They all fucking died.
All through the film, I was betting with myself on who would die. I'm thinking, "The Jamaican. We haven't heard much from him, and we aren't attached to him. Probably Bobby, as he's the young lead, with the sweetie back home (yeah, sounds like Armageddon), or maybe the divorced guy with the boy back home, or maybe the extra-homely guy that just met a nice girl. Most definitely George Clooney will go down with the ship, Bruce Willis-style."
So the ship goes down, Bobby/Wahlberg is bobbing in the sea, and I"m rubbing my hands together saying "Ok, who gets rescued? Huh, huh?" Then whammo, it's a week later, and we're at a funeral.
They all fucking died.
I wanted my $7 back. I wanted a FEEL GOOD MOVIE OF THE SUMMER.
Hmph.

So what was the point of the movie, then? Just that it was a really bad storm? Did any of the characters at least grow spiritually before they died?

I have no freakin' clue. The best anyone can come up with that I've talked to is that it was "based on a true story," and therefore had to be "real."
I suppose the morals of the story are:
1. True love never dies (Bobby/Wahlberg's love pines for him at home after his death).
2. Drowning is probably a horrible way to die.
3. Greed can sometimes make you do dumb things (they were in this storm because they had gone to a too-far-away place to catch fish, and happened upon the storm on the way back).
Apart from that, I think the purpose of the movie was to make some really cool waves.

So basically it's 'The Old Man And The Sea,' only for y2k it's 'The Sexy Guy From ER And The Computer-Generated Hurricane.'

Okay, so if everyone died, how'd they know enough of what happened to make a movie? Huh? Huh? Huh?
How "true" is that?

I thought about that, too.

"I hear tell that every two years you folks get a huge-ass computer-generated storm a-brewin' through here. Is that true?"
"A-yup. Hey, mister, you look a little like that guy from ER..."

Well, they never actually showed Marky Mark's dead body. So, he could have survived. Of course, in the sequel, his character will be played by Steve Guttenburg...

Perfect Storm sucked big time. I do not like George Clooney (or Mark Wahlberg). I'm not crazy about getting seasick while watching a movie. Nor do I like it when all the characters die in the end and I sit there wondering how the whole movie could have been based. I mean, it's not like they could interview anybody who'd been on the boat "Hey! What was it like? Did you guys fight on the boat? What were your last thoughts?"
That movie actually PISSED ME OFF, coming across as a "true story", yet I bet there was barely a line in that movie that was true (and we'll never know).

I hate to be the odd one out here, but I liked Perfect Storm a lot - probably because of the Mark Wahlberg / John C. Reilly teamup (Dirk and Reed, baby!)...
I saw it on cable, though. I might feel different if I had dropped $7 on it.
Last movie I saw in the theater was "A.I."... Boy - there's three hours of my life I'll never get back.

Haven't seen it. I don't think I will, just because of all the bad reviews. Why torture myself for three hours?

It's a pretty movie. Unfortunately, it tries to be about 4 different movies all rolled into one. Oh, and it never knows when to end.
