Miss Congeniality

I have a friend that's in her very last week of pregnancy, and I'm her birthing coach/baby sitter. Suddenly, all she wants to do is go to the movies, so that's what we've been doing. A LOT. I didn't even know Wednesday was bargain night, did you?

Anyway, the first flick we happened upon was "Miss Congeniality". This seemed mandatory, really, since it was filmed mostly in Austin and San Antonio, and since Sandra Bullock lives here in Austin.

Usually in a goofy/humor-based movie like this, all the funny parts are in the previews. Not so with MC. Sandra Bullock genuinely has a wonderfully comedic side, which I didn't realize. She also wasn't unbearably cute, which really helped make MC watchable, to me. (Too much cuteness tends to make me queasy.)

The plot's as silly as any of this genre, but the participants make it fun. My friend laughed so hard I thought she might go into labor right there in the theater (no such luck - we're still waiting).

William Shatner, Candice Bergin and others play, ironically, washed-up has-beens that are trying to relive their glory days. Shatner even gets to sing a little, and acts miffed when he's cut off mid-song at one point. Hee hee.

This is a good date movie. This is a good get-out-of-the-house-forget-life-for-a-minute movie. This is just a fun, brainless movie. Go see it. Supoprt the Austin scene, man.

I have to agree Sooz.
I was surprised by this movie too.
We went to the sneak preview before it hit the theaters, and I have to say, I was greatly impressed with the movie. It was genuinely funny. Sure it had no great plot, but it's not that kind of movie. It was however, just plain good fun.
