Sometimes when I get in a funk and don't feel like talking to anyone, especially if it happens to be about 5 in the evening, a good thing to do is to go hide out at a matinee and see a less-than-thought-provoking movie. Yesterday I saw "Save The Last Dance."
Please forgive me for not knowing the two main actor's names. If I weren't so lazy, I'd look 'em up. Alas.
Sarah Johnson is a high school ballet dancer in suburbia. She goes to a big audition, begging her mother (also her biggest supporter) to be there. Mom rushes to the audition, getting killed in a car wreck on the way. Sarah goes on a big guilt trip, vows to never dance again, and moves to the inner city with her musician dad.
Dad's not so bad. Although he's been an absent father, Sarah is pretty much ambivalent. She goes to a nearly all-Black school, encounters a smidgen of racism, falls in love with the good looking med school-bound guy, and the rest, well, it doesn't take a lot of imagination.
According to my ballet/jazz/tap/hip-hop dancer neighbor, the dancing in this movie is VERY good. The plot, though, is very Flashdance, very Footloose, very high-schoolish. It sends messages like "finish school" and "get out of the 'hood and make something of yourself", which is all well and good for the audience that is probably seeing this flick the most.
So, if you're looking for pretty bodies, fun dancing and a sweet but brainless story, go see this in the middle of the afternoon for a few bucks. If you're looking for deep, introspective social commentary, go see Traffic.
(For the record: There were about 30 people, total, in the theater this early in the day. When I walked out of Dance, I snuck into Traffic, which had just started. After 10 minutes, though, it was painfully obvious that my mind couldn't make the mental leap from one to the other, so I left.)
