Memento

Memento is one of those "art" movies that won't be playing at every MultiIncestualCinePlex in town. In circles of people more clever than us, they probably call it a "film." I don't usually go to these things, but several trusted friends urged me to view this thing.

I'm glad I did.

The plot line is as follows: An insurance claims investigator and his wife are attacked in their home. She's raped and murdered, and he suffers a brain injury that makes him unable to make new memories. His short-term memory is abysmal - we're talking minutes or hours, at best. He takes a lot of pictures and writes himself a lot of notes.

*****************POSSIBLE SPOILER, but not really, if you've read any reviews (and you'll figure it out in the first three minutes anyway):

The movie is shown backwards. Like, suppose the movie is the alphabet. First we see X-Z. Then we see T-X. Then R-T. It moves backwards, making your head spin, until the beginning, which is the end.

If anyone has seen this, I'd love to discuss it.

I meant to go see it, but...

...I forgot.

The ads and the reviews made it look intriguing.

I also keep meaning to see it. It's still showing at about a half dozen theaters here in town.

I can't believe they made a full-length movie about candy! Weren't the commercials annoying enough?

Oh wait, "Momento", not "Mentos"....sorry....

this movie was sick and twisted. perfect for me. it is the type of movie that i want everyone to see so that i can continue to discuss it. it leaves so much to the imagination that the more people i talk to the more twisted i realize it is.

I thought the whole idea, as well as the way it was presented, was very good and interesting.
Just imagine if everything you believe to be real, really was a delusion.

Just saw this last night. TRIP! Best movie I've seen in a long while.

Is it just ME, or was Guy Pearce actually HOT!? I wasn't too impressed with him in L.A. Confidential. (Plus, I would have sworn he was gay.) However, in Memento, he was a cross-between Brad Pitt and Val Kilmer. (Yum.)

By: Roxanne

Wow. Brad Pitt *and* Val Kilmer.

Dammit! Why did they have to ban human cloning?! I was looking forward to my very own "Hot Stud Celebrity Clone" for Christmas!!!

By: sooz

Val Kilmer can melt me like no one else (except Kevin Bacon, of course.) Yummy. He was the BEST Doc Holliday. And Batman. And, well, anything else he decided to do.

Response #12
By: Roxanne
Date: 9/27/01 11:34:22 AM

So we need to band together in support of cloning so that we can all have our very own Val Kilmer clone!!!!

Response #13
By: WitchHazel
Date: 9/28/01 8:21:41 AM

Thank you, ladies. I feel validated now. I've loved that man since "Top Secret"!

Yeah, he ROCKED in "Tombstone"! Doc Holliday's best line was when Big-Nose Kate was sitting on his lap and he was feeling her up from behind and says "Kate! You're not wearin' a bustle. How dude!"

Damn. I gotta get that one on DVD.

"I'm your Huckleberry."
And "I've got two guns, one for the both of ya."

By: bob

i think the best part is when he shows up the gunslinger by "slinging" his whiskey cup. that was such a great movie....gotta love it.

Response #16
By: Roxanne
Date: 9/28/01 3:23:25 PM

And I thought I was the only person in the world who ever saw "Top Secret"! Of course, I liked all the current famous celebs way back in their days when they were making movies that nobody saw.

Jim Carrey in "Once Bitten"
Anthony Edwards in "Gotcha!" and "Revenge of the Nerds"
John Cusack in "Better Off Dead"

Maybe I should have been a talent agent. I knew even back then that some of the actors in those forgettable 80's films had a star quality about them...

Wonder if it's too long to open up a casting couch, er, agency! :)

Response #22
By: WitchHazel

That's what I'm talkin' about. VVG's self-portraits show a very handsome (if disturbed) young man.

Response #23
By: WitchHazel
Date: 10/1/01 2:16:36 PM

Oh! And I bought the Tombstone DVD this weekend! Wooooo!

I love the coffee cup scene Bob was talkin' about. ROCKS! And Val Kilmer, even when made up to look like a sick Doc Holliday, is just TASTY.

Response #24
By: WitchHazel
Date: 10/1/01 3:01:33 PM

Sheesh. I'm from Seattle, so I have COFFEE on the brain. So shoot me!

Response #27

Well, the Val Kilmer part. (Kevin Bacon can't have me.)

Response #28
By: sooz
Date: 10/2/01 5:56:32 AM

Does anyone remember my Kevin Bacon saga, where I weasled my way into interviewing him? The story where, years ago, my husband and I agreed that if Taylor Dayne ever showed up for him, or Kevin Bacon for me, we'd get a day pass? And then I got to interview Mr. Bacon...

Well, Taylor Dayne is playing in San Antonio on Sunday. I have a call in to her management office about an interview. I'm thinking Richie will have to be the reporter this time. Muhahahaha! What a faboo early birthday present that would be for him.

Response #29

Sissop does look a little like Robby Benson.

Response #31
By: sooz

He does indeed. And if you turn the lites down low, Gowan can look like John Candy (see his www.xanga.com/gowan picture). However, in real life, Gowan is much more handsome than Mr. Candy.

Response #33
By: Cleotis

As a real young'un, I looked like that little blond haired kid that showed up as a regular in the very last episodes of the Brady Bunch.

Then I went through my "fat guy trying to look like a punk" days in the 80's.

Now I've settled into the "three kids two cars and a big-ass mortgage" husbandly look.

Neither of the last two have hollywood equivalents, unfortunately.

Response #34

The only famous person I've ever been compared to is Marlo Thomas of TV's "That Girl". My ex-boyfriend used to even greet me "Marlo looks hot tonight!" Ugh. :-) (I think he had a crush on her, and I was the next best thing.) Hee.

Response #35
By: Gowan McGland
Date: 10/3/01 12:47:55 PM

Oliver was the kid from The Brady Bunch.
He went on to do a lot of voice over work and also become
a rock n roll singer.

Marlo Thomas is married to Phil Donahue. I don't think there needs to be anything else said on that matter.

I see the resemblance between Gowan and myself.

...Which scares me some because I sometimes like looking at myself naked.

Response #52
By: Gowan McGland

I actually have a picture of the two of us together.

I dunno if I see much resemblance. S00Z sez we don't look much
alike anymore either. (shrug)

*I'm* not scared. I sometimes like to look at Cleo naked, too.

(I didn't say what KIND of picture ;) )

I have pictures of me, Zane, Tess, Sissop, Gowan, etc. at the Ale House (RIP) circa spring 1998. I meant to send them to Sissop to scan and post here, but never got around to it...

No nipple rubbing that evening, but lots of merry making!

Last I heard, the new pub, The Stag's Head, is due to open in November. Sadly, there will be no patio. HOWEVER, if a patio is required, there is a decent one across the street at McElroy's pub.

For those of you feeling nostalgic, I have added to the Ale House's web page three digitized videos of local newscasts covering the closing: http://www.webnuns.org/alehouse. The more observant among you may recognize Jay (Capy Toad Blast) being interviewed in not one but TWO of the clips. The *really*really* observant may even catch a glimpse of Mine Truly in the channel 26 clip.

Ok, boys and girls. Jimmy was just asking me "What's Webnuns about, anyway?" and I was explaining. I said "See here, I started a discussion about the film Memento, and now people wanna see a picture of Bob, and..." we get to Gowan's "stepping on the cat" response and, well, hell.

Allow me to interject: I watched 'Memento' last night and it was good. Lots of interesting moments, but I found myself not really caring how it would all resolve, since a person with no memories wouldn't ever see that kind of resolution.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled wiggling.
