Awakenings

So I was digging through a friend's movie collection, and saw "Awakenings." I'd never seen it, so I put it in.

Is it me, or was Robert DeNiro ABSOLUTELY amazing in this? It says he was nominated for an award, but didn't win. What the heck beat him out that year?

Then there's Robin Williams. Jimmy (who is away at a college acting class) called while I was watching the movie and asked "Whatchadoon?" I said "Watching a Robin Williams movie."

He said "Oh, oh! Wait, I know that one! He plays a kind of eccentric guy that's really good at what he does, but he goes about it in a different sort of way, so the bosses hate him and maybe fire him. He might have grown a beard if he was really serious. Was it that one? Huh huh?"

I was laughing so hard I couldn't answer.

"Which is it? Patch Adams? Awakenings? Dead Poets? Good Morning Viet Nam? Huh huh?"

Awakenings was a pretty good movie. It was the original Robin-Williams-as-quirky-genius-doctor movie, so it wasn't a dismal franchise at the time.

The worst thing you can say about it is that it ultimately led to the production of What Dreams May Come.

Oops. My mother said "throw in Good Will Hunting, please."

Surprising. Oscar usually prefers the actor who portrays the mentally-challenged roles (Rain Man, Forrest Gump, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, etc)

Is that because so many members of the Academy are mentally-challenged themselves?
