The Matrix

So think of Dark City, pretend the hero is Chow Yun-Fat, and pretend the director is John Woo. Then pretend that the hero is Keaneu Reeves trying to do Chow Yun-Fat, and that the director is someone whose name I can't recall trying to do John Woo.

Then add some superspiff computer graphics, enough dark glasses and leather clothing to keep a goth retail operation in buisness for ten years, a fascination with spent rounds, people with really dumb HAKKUR names, over-the-top cinematography, and techno music.

This movie is everything Tim Leary wanted psychedelia to NOT be: you take the red pill and see the world as it is, and lo and behold, it's far worse than anything in your wildest imagination. But it's still fun, and I reccommend it, unless you're a) a paranoid psychotic or b) epileptic, in which case you should AVOID, which is a good review encapsulation.

I dug it.

They managed to hide the core premise from me until mid-movie, which is rare in these days when the whole damn plot's laid bare in the coming attractions. Then, when it was revealed, I laughed out loud. Very clever.

I thought it was Virtuosity, Terminator2, Johnny Mnemonic, and a Jackie Chan movie all blended together with 1984. Very tasty.

I think it'll be a keeper when it comes out on video... there's a lot of freeze-framing to do.

Keanu Reeves + clothes + neural implants + blank stare = BANK!

Jackie Chan has something Reeves doesn't: charm.

Shrug.

The Matrix ain't no Shindler's List; but taken on its own merits it's a brainless good time with lotsa shiny bright objects that hipmotized me.

See it. It's worth $7 easy: less'n $3/per fun hour.

I agree with Ralf. I liked it too. Did have some great effects. And for an action movie that it was, actually had a fairly good story to it. I thought very entertaining in all. It will be a keeper for me as well.
