Countdown, eh? (a reflection on Sep 11, 2001)

Our 13 week study of Hosea (OT) was still fresh in my mind on the day our great country was attacked. We had just finished studying the prophets Hosea and Amos that Sunday before. We had been looking at these 2 Old Testament books for the last 3 months.

Hosea and Amos were prophets had the message of repent to the Israelites. (repent being to turn away from) You see, the Israelites had become too comfortable in their materialistic ways, making treaties with the wrong nations, becoming dependent on foreign goods, and of course worshipping false gods)

Of course, history repeats itself over and over (just like Hollywood movies) and we don't have to look too far back to find when our country was in a similar condition. Nothing really changes.

America has made treaties with the wrong people, has become dependent on foreign oil, has become very materialistic and tend to worry more about their SUVs and whether Michael Jordan will return to the NBA than what is going on in the world around them.

I sincerely hope that we as a country don't fall back into our comfort zones and forget that the world is changing, whether we choose to look or not.

And while Hosea warned that the Israelites would be divided and scattered, he ended with a message of hope.

Re: What happened...

Israel got its king, but not the one they were expecting.

Michael Jordan makes his announcement this week.

Screeeeeeech. That was a quick topic change!

Pardon my ignorance, but WHAT announcement?

Whether or not he'll return to pro ball.

He says he's gonna donate all his earnings this coming season to the 9/11/01 relief efforts.

Response #7
By: WitchHazel

Well, dang. I guess I have to change my opinion of him now, don't I. Shoot.

Response #8
By: Roxanne
Date: 9/27/01 11:25:35 AM

His first year earnings aren't going to be all that much. The teams have all reached their salary caps, so he'll have to come in at the base salary of about $400K.

Now if he promised to donate his *second* year earnings, then I'd be impressed with that!

Response #9
By: sooz
Date: 9/27/01 11:49:32 AM

But then what's he gonna buy pizza and beer with?

I dunno, a 400K annual salary seems like a pretty big deal to me. I haven't heard anyone else donating their annual salary...

Jordan's making $1M on the first year of his contract.

Response #11
By: WitchHazel
Date: 9/28/01 8:13:15 AM

Almost as much as *I* make.

Response #12
By: Roxanne
Date: 9/28/01 3:17:39 PM

What's the $1M after taxes? About $400K.

Response #13
By: sooz
Date: 9/29/01 9:00:29 AM

It's STILL a lot for anyone to donate a year's salaray, whether they make $1M, $400,000 or $18,000.

Hazel are you printing money again?

Response #15
By: Roxanne

I wonder who is monitoring all these donations of money? Wonder just how much of the money will actually get to the victims' survivors and how much each will end up getting...

By: WitchHazel

No, Ror*, just robbing banks again in my spare time to stave off boredom.

I will happily donate one-tenth of my loot to charity, though. The rest goes toward the self-indulgent and hedonistic lifestyle I lead. *Ahem*

season tickets in washington sold out fast after jordan's announcement. it's a shame they couldn't pay him more, so he could give more away.

Response #30
By: WitchHazel

Oh. Well, shoot. That sucks! How do I get ON the short list, then?

Response #31
By: bob

witch: i am afraid you have already eliminated all possibilities of that one.

Response #32
By: WitchHazel

Durn it. How can I possibly go on, knowing that I'm not a member of "the list"?

Response #33
By: rorschach
Date: 10/12/01 10:27:03 AM

trust me on this, you don't WANT on that list.... it is a BAAAAD list....

Response #37
By: Seventh of Seven
Date: 10/13/01 7:27:44 AM

it's a list full of short people. it's good or bad, depending on your predilections.

Response #38
By: sooz
Date: 10/13/01 10:51:33 AM

Of the three women on the list, two are very short (5'2" and under) and one is quite tall (5'10" or 5'11", I'm guessing).

I like the idea of a list for the short, though.

Response #39
By: WitchHazel
Date: 10/15/01 8:05:16 AM

Well, I'm not on it anyway, so really doesn't matter how tall I am.

*Sob*

Response #43
By: bob
Date: 10/15/01 11:45:39 PM

sos: that is probably good, i imagine her hit list would be the only list i am on, anyway

Response #44
By: WitchHazel
Date: 10/16/01 10:44:55 AM

No, the only list you're on is my "Looks Like Vincent Van Gogh" list, and that ain't too long.

Response #48
By: WitchHazel

Eh, there's no way you could possibly know that.

Now, he probably wasn't called an asshole as much as bob.

That's pretty much a given.

Response #54
By: bob
Date: 10/20/01 10:46:49 AM

i am not sure about that, he was excommunicated and bannished to live in the country, but i think i am working on a new record for assholeness
